In the Department for Education guidance document First Aid in Schools, Early Years and Further Education, the statutory need to provide first aid for employees under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations is set out. It also strongly recommends that non-employees such as pupils, students and visitors are provided for as well.

The ITC Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid for Schools and Colleges (EFASch) helps educational establishments meet their need for provision of first aid training for their staff. Unlinke First Aid at Work, which does not include paediatric first aid, this qualification covers both adults and children, including resuscitation procedures for children up to 18.

Delivery

Topics include: role and responsibilities of first aiders in schools and colleges; dealing with unresponsive adult and child casualties (both breathing and non-breathing); seizures; choking; blood loss.

Typical delivery methods are predominantly practical and the course is assessed by continual observation of learner performance.

Features

Qualification training requires:

  • Minimum tutor contact time of 6 hours (excluding breaks).
  • 1:12 tutor to candidate ratio.
  • Course must be completed within 3 weeks of starting.
  • Each delivery session must be a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Successful completion will result in candidate gaining ITC Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid for Schools and Colleges First Aid with a valid (licence to practice) lifetime of 3 years from date of completion.
  • The qualification is re-validated by attending another training course after 3 years.
